GA4 and Looker Studio: what to know before you start
Looker Studio is Google's free dashboarding tool and the quickest way to see GA4 and Google Ads in one report. A note on the name: in April 2026 Google gave it back its original name, Data Studio, and the address became datastudio.google.com (lookerstudio.google.com redirects automatically). Reports, data sources and links kept working. We call it Looker Studio here because that is what most people still search for.
This guide covers how to connect GA4 to Looker Studio, which pages a good Looker Studio dashboard template needs, which connectors exist and which limits stop a report from loading.
You won't find a template to download. Every GA4 property has its own key events and campaign naming, and a generic template tends to show numbers that aren't yours. What helps is knowing what it should contain and building it on your own data.
How to connect GA4 to Looker Studio, step by step
- 1Check your accessYou need at least read access to the GA4 property, using the same Google account you sign in to Looker Studio with.
- 2Create a data sourceOn the Looker Studio home page, click Create and choose Data source.
- 3Pick the Google Analytics connectorIt is a native connector built by Google. The first time, it asks you to authorise access to your account.
- 4Select account and propertyChoose the GA4 account and property and click Connect in the top right. The field list appears: the dimensions and metrics of the GA4 Data API, including your property's custom ones.
- 5Set credentials and freshnessIf the data source uses owner's credentials, every viewer shares the same cache and less quota is used. For GA4, data can refresh every 1, 4 or 12 hours, with 12 as the default.
- 6Create the reportClick Create report and Add to report. Do the same for Google Ads, which also has a native connector, and use a single data source per property across the whole report.
Which pages a Looker Studio dashboard template should have
Connectors: Google Ads and GA4 are native, Meta Ads isn't
Google's connector catalogue includes Google Analytics, Google Ads, Search Console, Google Sheets, BigQuery, YouTube Analytics, Campaign Manager 360, Display & Video 360 and Search Ads 360. They are free and maintained by Google.
As of October 2026 there is no Google-built connector for a Meta Ads Looker Studio dashboard. There are partner connectors, built by third parties, and new ones join the gallery almost every month. Google warns that community connectors may cost money, and in practice nearly all Meta Ads ones are paid. If one breaks, support comes from its developer, not from Google.
The alternative is to connect Meta to BigQuery rather than to the report. The BigQuery Data Transfer Service has a Facebook Ads connector, generally available since late October 2025 according to the BigQuery release notes, which loads campaign, ad set and ad reports into tables every day. It is billed on the compute it uses, per the Data Transfer Service pricing page. With GA4 exported and Google Ads loaded in the same place, the dashboard reads from one source.
Where to find free Looker Studio templates for GA4
Google has a template gallery inside the tool, under Templates (datastudio.google.com/navigation/templates). Google's own templates cover Google Analytics, Google Ads, Search Console, BigQuery, Google Sheets, YouTube Analytics, Display & Video 360, Search Ads 360 and Apigee.
To use one, open the template and click Use my own data in the top right, then swap the sample data source for yours. Google's templates are in English only, but your data appears in the language it was collected in. And any report shared with you can work as a template if you add /preview to the end of its URL.
They are a good place to learn. They fall short as soon as you need your own key events by name, Meta Ads or the CRM.
The GA4 API quotas that break reports
Every chart that reads GA4 directly uses tokens from the Google Analytics Data API. According to its documentation, as of October 2026 a standard property has these limits:
- 200,000 tokens per property per day.
- 40,000 tokens per property per hour.
- 14,000 tokens per project per property per hour.
- 10 concurrent requests per property.
Analytics 360 has higher limits, such as 2 million tokens a day. When they run out, charts show messages like “This property has issued too many requests in the last hour” or “Exhausted concurrent requests quota”. It happens most on Monday mornings, when half the company opens the report at once, or in reports with twenty charts per page.
You can check usage: in edit mode, right-click the canvas or a chart and choose “Google Analytics token usage”. Google suggests using owner's credentials, merging duplicate data sources into one, removing charts, extracting the data into a snapshot or exporting GA4 to BigQuery.
When to move from GA4 direct to BigQuery
Connecting GA4 directly works for a small report that a few people use. Move to BigQuery when:
- Quota errors show up every week.
- You need to join visits with CRM leads and sales.
- You want GA4, Google Ads and Meta Ads in the same chart with the same definitions.
- You need longer history than GA4 keeps, or unsampled event-level data.
The GA4 export is free on standard properties; what you pay for is BigQuery. We cover it in the GA4 BigQuery export and in the GA4 BigQuery export limit.
Looker Studio free vs Looker Studio Pro
GA4 and Looker Studio FAQ
Is Looker Studio free?
Yes, the standard version costs nothing. Pro costs 9 US dollars per user per project per month, according to Google Cloud as of October 2026, and only people who create or manage content need it.
Is there an official Meta Ads connector for Looker Studio?
No, as of October 2026 Google doesn't have its own. There are partner connectors, almost always paid, or you can load Meta data into BigQuery with the Data Transfer Service.
Why don't GA4, Google Ads and Meta Ads conversions match?
Each platform counts with its own attribution model and window, and Meta can also count conversions after an ad view, with no click. The usual fix is to pick one source of truth for leads, typically the CRM.
Can I use GA4 segments in Looker Studio?
Not with the Google Analytics connector, which doesn't support segments or comparisons. You rebuild them with filters or work from the BigQuery export.
Do you have a template to download?
No. A generic template doesn't know your key events or your campaigns. We would rather build it with you on your own data.
