GA4 BigQuery Export: What It Is For and When It Is Worth It

· By the from Analytics teamUpdated Chat on WhatsApp

What GA4 shows and what it keeps

Google Analytics 4 is built for looking: reports, explorations and dashboards inside the tool itself. It works well as long as your questions fit those reports. The problem comes when someone in sales asks something GA4 cannot answer on its own, such as which campaigns bring customers who actually sign, not just form submissions.

That is what the BigQuery export is for. GA4 sends every event it records —every visit, every click, every form— with all its parameters to a Google Cloud project, and from then on that data is yours to query, join and keep for as long as you want.

What you gain from the export

Event-level data
You do not get a report's totals; you get every event with its parameters. You can count whatever you need, however you need it.
No sampling or thresholds
Queries on exported data are not cut short to run faster and do not hide small rows.
Joins with other sources
In BigQuery, web events can be joined with the CRM, the ERP or Google Ads campaigns to follow a customer from the first visit to the invoice.
Your own history
GA4 data retention has a limit. Exported data stays in your project for as long as you decide.
Any tool on top
Power BI, Looker Studio, Tableau or an AI model can read from BigQuery without depending on the GA4 interface.

What to know before turning it on

The export starts saving data from the day it is switched on: it does not recover the past. So even if you are not going to use it yet, it usually pays to enable it as soon as possible and let the history build up.

There is a daily export and a streaming one, which is more immediate. Standard GA4 properties have an event limit on the daily export, and streaming has a cost in BigQuery; for most company websites the daily export is enough. BigQuery charges for storage and for queries, with a free tier that many small companies never exceed, so queries should be designed not to read more than they need.

And the data needs care: the export includes user and device identifiers, so the project should have tightly scoped permissions and comply with the GDPR.

How to set it up

  1. 1
    A Google Cloud project
With billing enabled and a region chosen, usually in the European Union.
  2. 2
    Link it from GA4
In the property admin, under BigQuery links, choosing the daily export, streaming or both.
  3. 3
    Permissions
Who can read the exported data, using service accounts for tools rather than personal users.
  4. 4
    A clean layer
Tables or views that turn events into sessions, conversions and campaigns using your company's definitions.
  5. 5
    Reports on top
The dashboard reads from that clean layer, not from raw events.

Frequently asked questions about GA4 and BigQuery

Is the GA4 BigQuery export free?

Linking it costs nothing on standard properties. What you pay for is BigQuery: storage and queries, with a monthly free tier.

Can data from before the link be recovered?

No. The export only saves what happens from the moment it is enabled.

Do you need to know SQL?

To query raw events, yes. With a clean layer in place, business teams can work in Looker Studio or Power BI without writing SQL.
